Unemployment hits 5 million
Unemployment hits 5 million
The number of unemployed workers receiving unemployment benefits leaped to an all-time high: near 5 million earlier this month. What’s more, new jobless claims remain steady at well above 600,000. This marks the forth week in a row that the numbers for those receiving unemployment benefits have been at a record level. Because both figures were much worse than expected, the Federal Reserve has now made new projections that show unemployment rising for the rest of this year.
This news underlines the fact that having a job these days is becoming somewhat of a privilege. Industries across the board just are not hiring right now and as a result those with a job need to treat it accordingly. I have said many times but I will repeat:
It is going to get worse. These record numbers will continue to be broken all the way into April and May. So for now, do not take your income for granted. Show up early, leave late, do whatever it takes to prove to your employer you are dedicated to the well-being of your company. Otherwise, one of the upcoming days could be your last. And when that happens, who knows how long it will take you to get hired again.
