NYPD – The boys in green?
NYPD’s finest, aka the boys in blue, just got greener. In an announcement today, it was revealed that the New York Police Department will be deploying 40 Nissan Altima hybrid patrol cars. The 18 marked and 22 unmarked hybrid cars will cost the department $100,000 more than the normally used impala as each Altima is around $1,500 more. However, the hybrid Altima also gets about twice the mileage in gas (35 v 16 mpg in city driving) so in the end the move definitely will make financial sense, save tax payers money, and ultimately reduce the department’s carbon footprint.
Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City, agreed:
“Through savings in fuel, these Altimas can quickly cover their additional cost, from then they will save taxpayers money – another example of how going green is good for our environment and our pocketbooks.”
As hybrid-technology increases, look for other organizations that use vehicles for their business to start buying hybrid or even electric cars. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the government started mandating services that drive around for business, example: taxi companies, to start using hybrid cars at a certain point down the road. Why not? It’s a win-win situation: help the earth and help the taxi companies’ pocketbooks in the end.
