Networking Tips

Be genuine. Networking is based on ones trust in another

Pick the correct groups. Before you go to meetings, identify what your goals are. What exactly do you want to get out of this interaction?

Hold volunteer positions within those groups/organizations. This not only keeps you visible, but you also get a chance to give back.

Ask questions. Who, what, where, etc. This won’t only open up a discussion but it will also show others you are interested.

Be a resource. Take every opportunity to show that you can offer suggestions, ideas, contacts, etc. It isn’t networking when contributions only come from one side of the table.

Develop a clear cut statement about what you do. When trying to make contacts the most common question is “So what do you do?” Be able to express that in a clear and concise manner. Note: the other most asked question will be: “How can I help you?” Make sure you can answer that in the same manner.

Don’t sit on your referrals. Follow through as quickly as possible.

A quick thank you goes a long way. After you meet somebody don’t be too shy to give a quick call to thank them for the meeting. Compliments like: “It was a pleasure to meet you” don’t hurt either.
