Jet Airways strike continues – 13,000 passengers stranded

Mumbai – We are entering the second day of the standoff between Jet Airways and the pilots of the National Aviatiors Guild (NAG). The number of pilots reporting in sick has now risen from 360 to 432. Yesterday, the damage caused by the mass sick leave caused 186 flights to be grounded and over 13,000 passengers stranded. The pilots are said to be protesting over the firing of two of their collegues. Captain Hamid Ali, COO, gave these numbers for today: 432 out on sick leave, 32 international flights cancelled, and 174 domestic flights cancelled. CFO, Sudheer Raghavan, said that the domestic bookings have dropped by 9,000. Domestic booking for the airline are generally around 23,000.  “We can carry about half of them on our Jet and JetLite aircraft. For international operations, we normally have around 10,500 bookings per day which is now down to 9,500. We can carry a substantial number and the rest can be accommodated in other airlines.”

This just goes to show that the amount of damage and losses a strike like this can incur is massive. While the pilots sit on sick leave, you have to remember that all of the flight attendants are unable to work. Flight attendants generally get paid per flight so as a result those working as an attendant are being basically forced to strike as well. Not to mention the fact that thousands of citizens that are stranded.
