Bernard Madoff arrives at Butner Prison

Bernard Madoff arrived at his new home in Butner, North Carolina: The Butner Federal Correctional Complex. It is here where Madoff will begin serving his 150 year sentence for fraud and money laundering.

Prior to the transfer to Butner Prison, Madoff, was in a high-security jail in Manhattan. He has been there since his March 12 guilty plea. Madoff left that facility this morning and arrived at Butner shortly after 11:15 a.m., bureau spokesman Greg Norton said.

Madoff will be assigned to a “dormitory-style” housing unit and is expected to be given a job. It is possible that Madoff will be transferred at some point, but for now, according to Norton, Butner Prison is “where he is designated to be”.

Located in NE Durham, NC, the Butner Federal Correctional Complex houses 4,784 inmates. Among the many inmates, there are a several high profile inmates, most notably Adelphia Communications’ founder John Rigas, former Rite Aid Corp. chief counsel Franklin Brown, and Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard.

Madoff, who’s being placed in the medium-security section of Butner and has been assigned prisoner number 61727-054.

The criminal case is U.S. v. Madoff, 09-cr-00213, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan).
